EFFECTS OF INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS ON CHEMISTRY STUDENTS ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE (A CASE STUDY OF ILORIN WEST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, KWARA STATE, NIGERIA)

Abstract

In lorin West Local Government Area, Kwara State, the impacts of instructional materials on
chemistry teaching and learning were examined in the study. The researcher used the Chemistry
Performance Test (CPT) to determine the effects of the instructional materials on the learning
outcomes of chemistry students; engaging in a quasi-experimental design in the study. The
gender and type of school attended by the respondents were the primary variables in the inquiry.
Seventy-eight(78) students were chosen at random from four different schools to participate in
the study. Using purposeful selection approaches, two public schools and two private schools
were chosen for the study. The schools were chosen according to type and location. Since the
hypotheses were tested with a t-test at a significant level of 0.05. Teaching is demonstrated by
the outcomes of the research. Students' performance improves dramatically when teachers make
use of instructional tools to convey knowledge to them, according to the results. Furthermore,
the results showed that instructional materials had no effect on the achievement score of male
students, but the opposite is true for female students. Thus, it is suggested that chemistry classes
in high school should make use of course materials.
