ASSESSING THE CORRELATION BETWEEN PRE- SERVICE TEACHERS' DISPOSITION TOWARDS THE TEACHING PROFESSION AND TEACHING EFFECTIVENESS IN ERIN -IJESA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF OSUN STATE SECONDARY SCHOOLS, NIGERIA

Abstract

In any teacher education program, the attention is always paid to the disposition assessment in
the practicum particularly towards the teaching profession and its effectiveness as the useful
tools in gauging pre-service teachers success in their professional capacities as teachers and as
cornerstone to improve their future teaching performance. In the light of this, this study
assessed the correlation between pre- service teachers' disposition towards the teaching
profession and teaching effectiveness in Osun State secondary schools, Nigeria. The study
adopted the survey research type of the quantitative research design. All pre-service teachers in
the Nigerian state of Osun made up the study's population. The multi-stage sampling procedure
was adopted for sample selection. In all, 120 pre-service teachers were sampled for the study. A
self-report instrument tagged "Pre- Service Teachers' disposition towards the Profession and
Perceived Teaching Effectiveness Questionnaire" was used for data collection. The Cronbach
alpha indexes of 0.75 and 0.77were obtained as the reliability coefficient of the instruments' sub-
sections. The data obtained were analysed on SPSS version 23, using both descriptive and
inferential statistics at 0.05 significance level. Findings revealed that the Pre-service teachers'
dispositions towards the teaching profession is positive, and are highly effective in teaching in
Osun State secondary schools; teaching effectiveness, and disposition towards the profession
are negatively related; pre-service teachers' dispositions towards the profession has a positive
significant relationship with their teaching effectiveness; The study recommends that education
stakeholders particularly Tetfund, should continue to organise and sponsor pre- service teacher
training for professional development and conditions of service for the teaching profession be
regularly and positively reviewed.
